Isaiah 57:15

For thus says the High and Lofty One
who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
“I dwell in the high and holy place,
with him who has a contrite and humble spirit,
to revive the spirit of the humble,
and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”

Ephesians 2:4–6

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 3:1–3

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

Higher Ground is more than an event, or perspective. It’s a place of growth, revelation, and advancement. It’s a place of victory.

Higher Ground is:

  • I once was lost, but now I’m found.

  • I was empty, but now I’m filled.

  • I was an orphan, but now I’m adopted.

  • I was poor, but He made me rich.

  • I was blind, but now I see.

Higher Ground is Secure Footing

Psalm 40:2

He also brought me up out of a horrible pit,
out of the miry clay,
and set my feet upon a rock,
and established my steps.

Colossians 1:13

He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.

God is good at getting us from unstable conditions to firm, stable places.

Higher Ground is peaks and plateaus.

Genesis 22:2
God’s provision

Moses on Mount Sinai
Exodus 19–20

Elijah on Mount Carmel
1 Kings 18:19
God’s power

God wants to build habits instead of moments.

Peaks are about:
Clarity; vision; refreshing; breakthrough.

Plateaus are about:
Formation—holding the ground you’ve gained, growing in knowledge, and learning to live above the valley mindset.

Steps to Higher Ground:

  • Holy dissatisfaction with where you are

  • More interaction with the Holy Spirit

  • Lay aside the weights that keep you from climbing

“I’m Pressing on the Upward Way” — Johnson Oatman Jr.

I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

Lord, lift me up, and let me stand
By faith on Canaan’s tableland;
A higher plane than I have found,
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where these abound
My prayer, my aim is higher ground

I want to live above the world,
Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled;
For faith has caught the joyful sound,
The song of saints on higher ground.

I want to scale the utmost height
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray till rest I’ve found,
“Lord, lead me on to higher ground.”
